What an echo test shows

Echo is the first test for most heart symptoms and is often repeated to track treatment.

  • Ejection fraction — how strongly the heart pumps
  • Valve narrowing or leakage (rheumatic heart disease)
  • Holes in the heart and other congenital defects
  • Damage after a heart attack, clots and fluid around the heart

When is an echo advised?

Breathlessness, swelling of the feet, palpitations, a murmur heard on examination, uncontrolled blood pressure, before surgery, and follow-up of known heart disease or after a heart attack.

How to prepare

No fasting or special preparation is needed for a routine echo. Bring old echo and ECG reports for comparison. The test is safe in pregnancy and for children.

Frequently asked questions

Is an echo the same as an ECG?

No. An ECG records the heart's electrical activity; an echo is an ultrasound image showing structure, valves and pumping function.

How much time does an echo take?

About 15–20 minutes, and the report is usually handed over immediately after the scan.

Is echocardiography safe?

Yes. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and can be repeated as often as needed.
